Nancy grew up in the suburbs and countryside around Baltimore, Maryland. For many years she studied art privately and was tutored in the Old Masters’ style of painting using the Maroger technique. At the University of Maryland in College Park she received her B. A. in art. She later received her M. F. A. from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.
She has taught art on many levels: pre-school, primary, middle, and high school, community college and on the University level and in various places: Maryland, Virginia, Ohio, and Mississippi.
Her work has been exhibited in each of these states over the years in media that has included gouache, watercolor, acrylic, oil—on paper and canvas—and hand-painted fiber art. Her oeuvre has ranged from commissioned portraits to hand-painted and dyed clothing sold in various venues.
Abstract art in various media has been her focus for the past ten years.
My painting flows as if in a dance where the leader changes multiple times.
The painting begins with seemingly mindless marks that evolve into a composition using paint, collage, and mixed media. I apply motifs from my personal visual vocabulary—over, under, and around the painting’s marks. I turn the canvas upside down and sideways to see if we are saying anything yet. If not, I give the lead back to the painting.
Sometimes more intuitive marks, fewer planned steps; at other times more planning, less intuition. There is a harmonious struggle between my will and that of the painting. When I see the final pose, I know we have finished the dance.
